We are in unprecedented times. We are all shut inside our houses, trying to make the best of a not-so-great situation. And, to be honest, a ton of us are realizing that while we might be living active, high-energy lives, when it comes down to it we’re a bit lonely. But that doesn’t mean we can’t find some fun online date ideas to stir up some human interaction.
Online dating numbers are skyrocketing. Since we’re stuck at home listening to the consistent drone of Netflix or the overall silence of our empty homes, we’re realizing that this crisis would be best spent with someone else. So, we’re searching for love.
But what happens if we meet that special someone or find a someone that we’d like to get to know a tad bit better? We can’t go out on a date because of social distancing. And even if we wanted to break that rule (please don’t), there’s really no place we can go because nothing is open.
That means we need to get a bit creative. Just because we’re stuck inside doesn’t mean we can’t move those relationships forward. So, if you’re ready to take your text-based relationship to the next level, how do you have a stellar first date online?
Have a Drink (or a Coffee) Over Video Chat
If you’re looking for an idea for a first date online then having a coffee or a drink via video chat is my favourite easy to set-up pick. Much like an in-person date, you don’t want to overcommit your time.
Having a coffee, tea or adult beverage is a flexible option for a virtual meet-and-greet because it can be simple and quick. But much like if you were out at a coffee shop or a bar and you’re enjoying yourself, you can extend the date—just make sure you don’t have too many drinks ?.
Take a Phone Walk
Being on a stay-at-home order—specifically if it’s voluntary, if you’re sick this is NOT an option—doesn’t mean that you can’t go outside and enjoy the weather. If you’re itching to get out of the house consider bringing your phone and date along with you.
This is one of those online date ideas for those that love to be on their feet. Set a time to chat on the phone and arrange to both head out and about and chat while taking in your neighbourhood scenery. This option does not mean you should meet up because that can very easily result in a lack of social distancing, so make sure to do your walks solo.
Stream a Movie Together
Movies have always been a great date idea but traditionally they’ve been reserved for in-person events. But apps like Netflix Party make it easy for you to watch a move with someone else when you can’t be in the same place.
How does it work? Netflix Party synchronizes your video playback so everyone in your Netflix Party is watching the same thing at the same time, and adds a chat function so you can converse while watching. It’s important to note that you need to have Google Chrome to use this app.
While this is obviously not exactly the same thing as heading out to the cinema together, it’s a great choice for these times spent hanging out at a distance. Make yourself some popcorn, grab a drink and have a date in your pjs!
Virtually Cook Together
If you’re looking for more interactive online date ideas, then consider making dinner together… while you’re apart. While you can’t eat a meal at the same table, you can certainly cook and enjoy the same meal at a distance.
To do this, find an easy meal that matches the cooking skill ability of both parties, get your ingredients delivered (or, if you’re brave, venture out and get them), and spark up a video chat. You can still chat, cook and have a great time!
If you’re looking to have a little fun and maybe some competition on your date, playing an online game can be a great choice. You can play two-player games like Guess Who, Scrabble or even pull out good ol’ fashioned (virtual) playing cards, all online with your partner. These are great online date ideas if you want something different.
But if you’re looking for a more interactive date that works more like real life, you might consider playing something like Second Life. While this might be a bit out-of-the-box for most people, this virtual world can allow you to head to a ballroom to dance the night away, walk through a romantic garden or even visit the Eiffel tower. If you’re looking for a memorable date, this could be the answer.
Go on a Tour Together
Being stuck at home really sucks. If you’re anything like me, you’d rather be anywhere else (read: Disneyland), which makes taking a virtual tour one of my favourite online date ideas.
There are a ton of places that have moved some exhibit online so those that can’t be there in person can still have a great experience. So, if you and your date are up for a tour, here are a few things you can do:
- Head to Walt Disney World or Disneyland
- Tour the National Aquarium
- Visit the animals at the San Diego Zoo
- Virtually tour the Vatican
- Explore the Louvre
These aren’t the only online destinations, there are a TON of adventures that you can undergo while you’re stuck at home. And, you definitely don’t need a date to do it.
Have a Virtual Dinner Date
If you’re looking for more intimate online date ideas that involve food than having a virtual dinner date could be a great pick. You simply set your half of the table, get the room ambiance right and give your new date a call via video chat.
You can take this virtual dinner date to the next level by getting delivery from the same menu. While it might take a little extra coordination to get your meals at the same time, it could be a great and uber-romantic idea.
Do a Couples Workout… Remotely
If you and your date are a bit more active (or you want to be) then doing an online workout together could be a great pick for having some face time while doing something you love.
Find a video online that works for both of you and video chat while you work out. Or, take turns running the workout so you can stay active while spending some time together online.
