What to Wear to Disneyland in July: The Plus Size Guide

Wondering what to wear to Disneyland in July?

Whether you’re visiting the parks for the first time or you’re headed back for a little more fun, bringing along the right clothes can truly make or break your experience. You want to consider the weather, what you’re planning on doing (in Disneyland and beyond), what makes you feel confident, and what will make you most comfortable.

You’re in luck, Disneyland (the OG California parks) are my FAVORITE place to enjoy the Disney magic. So, if you’re looking for tips and tricks to stay comfortable, look cute, and have fun, this plus size California vacation guide is for you.

In this post we’ll be talking about the BEST clothing options for California Adventure and Disneyland in July and what other items will help you enjoy your day at Disney. It is possible to be comfy AND cute at Disneyland, so let’s figure out what you need to pack!

Table of Contents

What to Wear in Disneyland in July

1. Consider the Weather

The temperature WILL dictate your clothing. It should be the biggest consideration in what you bring along.

California in July is HOT — especially Southern California — so you’ll want to plan your wardrobe accordingly. You’ll want to focus on lightweight clothing that’s breathable like cotton and linen. Other great options include chambray, rayon and some blends. Avoid fabrics that will cling to your body, if you sweat this will spell uncomfortable disaster.

If there are “problem areas” that you want to cover, like a stomach or even your arms – FIRST: know that you don’t have to – but light layers can be a great option. Something like a lightweight cardigan or kimono can help keep you cool in the hot, hot heat.

It’s worth noting that there is the possibility of rainy days. While you might not need it while you’re there, you might want to consider including a poncho or even plastic bag among your Disneyland outfits, just in case. A cute Disney umbrella would probably do too!

2. Pick Comfy (and Cute!) Shoes

A bad pair of shoes can seriously ruin your trip to Disneyland. That’s why you want to make sure you pick something that’s comfortable, supportive and won’t give you blisters.

I have VERY wide feed. The Skecher’s On-The-Go flip flops were the comfiest shoes I dawned at Disneyland, and they worked for the 20,000+ step days that I had. I would HIGHLY recommend them. Not only are they cute and functional, but they provide good support (especially for flip flops!).

However, if you want something a little more supportive, you could also find a utility-focused strappy sandals or even a comfy pair of crocs. Either are good options. The weather in Southern California really is HOT, and you want to make sure that you’re wearing a comfy pair of shoes that are breathable.

Close-toed shoes will give you maximum protection, so you could go with a lightweight, breathable options like the casual ballet loafer.

Shoes are going to seriously be the most valuable thing you pack. It doesn’t matter how cute anything else you have is, if your feet are sore, your Disney trip is probably going to be ruined. So pick something comfy first and cute second.

3. Accessorize!

Accessories can be the most fun part of your Disneyland attire. You can use items that are both practical and adorable to make everything come together. There are a few accessories that’ll make your next Disney trip more magical:

Sun Hat

That said, in July, you might want to consider a basic sun hat instead. This way your head stays covered and you keep the hot, harmful rays off it. Plus, you don’t have to worry about the wind mess up your hairdo – though you will want to make sure it stays secured while you’re on the rides.

Magical Ears

Disney ears are the BEST way to make a fun little costume. They come in all shapes, sizes and colors – like July Forth themed (perfect for this summer month). Ears are also ideal for Disney bounding, they can help bring a character come alive (without actually having to dress like them which is against their dress code). Whether you go with Mickey or Minnie ears or something else entirely, it’ll make your experience that much more magical.

Sunglasses

Anaheim is sunny in the summer (as it should be), and sunglasses are a must have. I ‘d recommend a pair of classic aviators or a bright and fun pair with some gems. Nothing too over the top, but just enough to make your outfit feel complete. Just make sure you take them off when you’re snapping your iconic picture with Mickey Mouse.

Bag

Your bag should be functional, so you can store all the items you need for a full day at Disneyland: camera, phone, charging cords, wallet… honestly anything you’ll need to bring along. Travelon makes my favorite bags for ANY trip.

But Disney Loungefly bags are also a great way to celebrate your love of Disney. Though they’re not exactly theft proof (like Travelon) they are hella cute and Disney appropriate. My favorite Disney Loungefly backpacks include:

4. Opt for Comfort First

Looking cute at Disneyland is important to a lot of us, but comfort is the number one priority. You can look cute as hell, but if your skirt is too tight or your bare thighs are rubbing together all day long, you’re experience will probably end up in the “bad” pile.

Of course, the ultimate goal is to find something BOTH cute and comfortable. And that is totally achievable.

To stay comfortable at Disneyland in July, you’ll want to consider a few clothing staples to throw in your suitcase:

  • A skort to help prevent chub rub
  • A flowy dress or romper for letting the breeze brush against your skin
  • A lightweight, breathable top with a high neck for sun protection
  • A pair of linen pants if you want to keep the sun off your bare legs
  • A pair of moisture-wicking underwear to help soak up any sweat

It won’t hurt to pack a light long sleeve sweater, cardigan or even a scarf in your backpack for after dark. While we’re willing to be it’ll be warm enough without, you don’t want to end up wandering around Disney when you’re cold!

5. Don’t Forget the Sunscreen!

Sunscreen is NOT optional.

I live on the Mexican Emerald Coast where the sun is almost always shining, and I never put anything LESS than 50 SPF on. I highly recommend doing the same in Disney.

You’ll want to apply waterproof sunscreen ALL OVER before you leave your hotel room, then periodically (every 4 hours or so is recommended) throughout the day. Pay particular attention to places that are more likely to burn like your nose, shoulders and the back of your neck.

It doesn’t matter your age, skin condition or color, you ARE at risk of a sun burn. Not only that, but skin cancer is a real thing. Prevent sun damage by packing along a solid bottle of sun block.

My go-to sunscreen is Hawaiian Tropic Island Sport reef-friendly sunscreen, but anything you’re comfortable with will do. Just make sure you take care of your skin!

6. Don’t Forget About Chub Rub

Chub rub is a REAL bummer when you’re out and about in the warm months. While you don’t have to be plus size to experience it, MANY of us bigger babes are prone to experiencing it.

For theme park days, I recommend investing in a solid pair of shorts that can help make sure your bare skin doesn’t rub together. If you’re wearing a dress, these can be some lightweight bike shorts that you throw on underneath.

I, myself, tend to avoid skirts and dresses altogether. Instead, I stick with skorts, 2-in-1 dresses and rompers. The built-in shorts on all of these can help keep your skin separated.

Unfortunately, between your legs isn’t the only place you can experience chub rub. Plus size people can also experience it under breasts, apron bellies, and arms – and honestly, anywhere else your skin might rub together.

Sometimes it’s just plain unavoidable. With that in mind, there are powders, creams and clothing items that can help you avoid it, and treat it if it happens. It’s uncomfortable when it does, so you want to avoid it when you can!

7. Have Fun With Your Wardrobe!

The BEST thing about heading to Disneyland is that you can dress however you want (as long as you adhere to any rules.

Have fun with your outfits, and don’t be afraid to express yourself. It’s your vacation – make it fun! You can wear whatever colors you want, prints, layers, hats and scarves – the options are endless.

The MOST IMPORTANT part to remember is to dress for you and wear whatever makes you feel confident. If you don’t like wearing shorts, then don’t. If you prefer a dress, go for it. Wear something that’s comfortable and stylish – both words can coexist!

What NOT to Wear to Disneyland in July

You should dress how you want for Disneyland, whatever will make you comfortable. But there are rules that you have to adhere to. They’re pretty basic, self-explanatory, and easy to follow, including:

  • You CANNOT wear costumes if you’re 14 years or older
  • You CANNOT wear masks if you’re 14 years or older (unless they’re for medical purposes)
  • No clothing with obscene language, graphics, or otherwise objectionable material
  • No clothing that’s excessively torn or loose fitting, and nothing that drags on the ground (it can be a tripping hazard)
  • No inappropriate visible tattoos that contain objectionable language or designs
  • No bare feet
  • No clothing that displays an excessive amount of skin (it’s not a club, it’s a theme park)

These rules are not crazy, they’re simple to follow. Disney wants to make sure that the theme parks remain welcoming to everyone AND they don’t want you confusing their guests and signing your own autographs!

Note that if you DO NOT follow these rules you can be refused admittance or even ejected from the park. Disney is a family-friendly environment, so while you want to take the chance to dress how you’re comfortable, you NEED to make sure that it’s still appropriate and within the rules.

What to Pack for Disneyland in July

Packing for Disneyland in July is pretty easy, but there are a few things that you’ll want to make sure that you bring along. Most importantly, you’ll want to make sure that you have comfortable shoes. You will be doing a lot of walking and standing, so bring a pair of sneakers or sandals that give your feet some support and cushioning.

Clothing Packing List for Disneyland Park

  • 2-3 pairs of shorts, pants or skorts (whatever you prefer)
  • 2-3 lightweight, breathable tops
  • 1-2 rompers or dresses
  • 5-6 pairs of underwear (it doesn’t hurt to bring an extra)
  • 1-2 protective sorts (if required)
  • Solid pair of comfortable walking shoes
  • Sun hat
  • Bathing suit
  • Comfy lightweight pjs
  • A light sweater or poncho (for those cooler evenings)

Other Items for Your Disneyland Packing List

You’ll probably also want to bring food and/or snacks to help when you’re walking about the park. Ultimately, you want to make sure that everything you bring to the park fits into your bag, is easy to carry, and is useful. Don’t bring along anything you don’t need!

Tips for Visiting Disneyland in July

July is a great time of the year to visit Disney in California, but the crowds are going to be a bit higher and the weather a bit warmer. To make the most of your Disneyland visit, here are the Disney tips we recommend:

Drink LOTS of Water

You don’t want to be dehydrated while you’re trying to enjoy the park, so make sure you’re drinking plenty of water throughout the day. I HIGHLY recommend that you bring along a packable water bottle that you can refill at the fountains and restaurants in the park as you need it. You don’t want to be stuck in lines or wandering around the park without water when you need it.

Arrive Early

If you are staying at one of the Disneyland Resort hotels AND have a valid park ticket for the day, you are able to enter the park 30 minutes earlier than open time. Not all the rides, shops and restaurants will be open, but you will get a head start.

But even if you aren’t staying at one of the resorts, you’ll want to get to the park sooner rather than later to get a head start on your day. The earlier you get there, the better chance you have to do everything you want (and maybe even take advantage of lower wait times).

Be Mindful of the Heat

July is hot in Southern California. Be sure to be mindful of the heat, wear lightweight clothing that breathes well and keep an eye out for shady spots when you need to take coverage. This also includes making sure that you always have access to water, and use sunscreen throughout the day – even if it’s cloudy.

Take a Break

Disneyland days are a lot of fun, but they’re hard too. You’ll want to make sure you are taking breaks throughout the day to recharge your batteries. Whether it’s a mid-day break for lunch or just a few minutes of downtime in one of Disneyland’s many cool, shady spots – give yourself permission to take a break and enjoy some downtime.

Do NOT Underestimate a Good Pair of Shoes

You DO NOT want to be stuck in a long line with blistered feet and sore arches. Be sure to bring along a good pair of shoes that are comfortable enough for walking around the park all day. If you’re looking for something stylish, try on a pair of Skecher’s Joy Go Walks – these shoes are lightweight and breathable, perfect for a day at the park.

Traveling to Disneyland in July

July Crowd Levels

July is a busy month at Disneyland (and other Disney Parks). The kids are off school and the summer holidays are in full bloom. Crowds are predicted to be moderate to high levels, as summer tends to be (one of) Disney’s busy seasons.

July Disneyland Special Events

You can find events at Disneyland almost every month, though July has a fewer amount (probably because it’s naturally the busy season). Here’s what you can expect to find this year:

  • July 1-5, 2023: Fourth of July Weekend
  • July 17, 2023: Disneyland Birthday Celebrations

July Weather

The weather in Los Angeles in July is usually hot and dry. Average temperatures at Disneyland in July are between an average high temperature of 84°F (29°C) to an average low temperature of 64°F (18°C). If you’re looking for a warm weather holiday, here is where you’ll find it. But note that if you’re not into hot weather, you might want to consider heading there later in the year.

Where to Stay

Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa

It’s not secret that the best Disney experiences start at Disney-owned resorts. These give you a chance to extend the magic beyond the gate of the park. Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa is one of their premier resorts, offering premium elegance and impeccable service.

This Disneyland resort hotel sits on the California Adventure side of Downtown Disney, offering easy access, so long as you have a ticket to the park. Not to mention, because it’s a Disney hotel, vacationers get access to special perks like longer hours at the park via early entry.

The Grand Californian is home to Napa Rose Disneyland restaurant, where you can grab tickets to the Disney Princess Breakfast Adventures. Not only does give you a classic Disney theme experience, there’s also an opportunity to see more Disney characters. Disneyland restaurant reviews say this is a GREAT place to eat with delicious food serving a good time.

This magical Disney resort also gives you access to different themed hotel pool options, a wide variety of cool themed rooms, and the ability to get in on the rope dropping festivities, so long as you’ve go your hands on theme park tickets for that day!

Disneyland Hotel

For a more classic experience, there’s the Disneyland Hotel

It’s a more budget-friendly pick that still gives you access to special perks that are put away JUST FOR Disney-owned hotels, like early access to either park (as long as you have a valid ticket). That said, “budget friendly” is a relative term, you’re still most-likely looking at $631+ USD per night.

There are four different towers to choose from, each which provide you with a different experience:

  • Fantasy
  • Frontier
  • Adventure
  • Discovery

Each of those provide you with a unique experience, and are a short stroll to the entrance of BOTH Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park.

It’s the Disney-specific perks that really make this hotel worth it for your next stay. That said, they also have themed pools – perfect for cooling down after a hot day of Disneyland weather in the summer. The rooms are upscape but practical, and the in-hotel restaurants makes some seriously delicious food.

Fairfield by Marriott Anaheim Resort

The Fairfield is where my family stayed the first time we ever went to Disneyland, and I have some great font memories from it. It’s within walking distance of Disneyland – honestly, its one of the closets hotels that’s not Disney owned.

It has an on-site restaurant called Millie’s, which I happen to really like. However, that does mean that there’s no free breakfast (boo!). The courtyard has a nice outdoor pool and a whirlpool and there’s free wifi (which is a bit more standard).

The rooms themselves are pretty nice. They’re spacious, and nicely designed. Plus there’s an air conditioner and a TV right in the room, which is PERFECT for after a hot day at the park.

Kings Inn Anaheim at The Park & Convention Center

The Kings Inn Anaheim is another one of my favorite Disneyland-area hotels. It has a nice courtyard and patio area with an outdoor swimming pool. I spent plenty of relaxing time after long days at the park there.

The rooms themselves are nice – it’s a motel-style hotel, which I swear isn’t trash at all (I know they don’t have the best reputation). The room we stayed in had two comfy Queen beds, air conditioning and a TV.

It’s right next door to a outdoor mall where I actually found some really nice plus size clothes and cute housewares. Its within walking distance of the park (and a Cheesecake Factory), but the bus stops close too.

Hampton Inn & Suites Anaheim Resort

If you want a pet friendly hotel that’s close to Disneyland, the Hampton Inn & Suits Anaheim Resort is a great pick. Not only is this a nice hotel that has bag storage on-site for your last Disney day (if you need it), but Fido can join you on the road too.

There’s free wifi throughout the facility, an outdoor swiming pool AND the hotel offers a delicious free breakfast – Disneyland is expensive enough, you need to take savings where you can.

This is a great choice if you need to plan a business meeting of sorts. It has a business (and convention center) right on site.

I particularly love the rooms in this hotel. They’re finely decorated, and you can grab a suite if you need a little more room. Each room has air conditioning right in it, which is PERFECT for the hot summer months at Disneyland.

Best Plus Size Friendly Rides in Disneyland

Disneyland is pretty plus size friendly, especially when you compare it with some other theme park options out there (I’m lookin’ at you Universal). While MOST of the rides are plus size friendly, my favorites are:

Final Thoughts: What to Wear to Disneyland in July

July is a great time to visit Disneyland. The weather is nice and the park is full to the brim with families enjoying all it has to offer. With that in mind, you’ll want to have some cute, lightweight and breathable clothes in your bag.

I’m personally partial to cute AF rompers because they’re easy to wear, and overall super cute. But if you’re looking for something a little more sophisticated, a sundress is always nice. A pair of sandals or wedges are perfect for the summer months – just make sure they’re comfortable enough to walk those theme park miles.

If you want to look extra stylish, grab a few accessories like a hat or cute bag. Those can really pull your ensemble together. No matter what you wear, the most important thing is to stay comfortable and have fun!

I highly recommend that you pack a few items in your bag that can help with the summer heat. You want a handheld fan, a sun hat and some glasses, and even a bottle of mist might help you out. Don’t forget to bring along a water bottle so you can stay hydrated.

Disneyland in July is a great time – just make sure you have the right Clothing items and accessories to stay cute, comfortable and ready for any adventure. With these tips in mind you can be sure that your Disneyland vacation will be full of magical memories! Enjoy your stay at the happiest place on Earth. 🙂
