How to Wear a Romper: The Plus Size Guide

There’s a weird unwritten rule (that I refuse to follow) that says that boxy bags are the best look for plus size.

Hell, nah. That’s not true at all.

I’m a MASSIVE fan of the plus size jumpsuit, so it makes sense that I also like to cheerlead romper wearing.

Not sure how to wear a romper as a plus size fashionista? No problema!

I get feedback that a lot of larger women aren’t sure about wearing rompers.

They simply don’t know if they can pull it off.

But as the short counterpart to a jumpsuit, rompers are a fun, cool way to enjoy the summer while looking good.

So, let’s talk about how to wear a romper when you’re plus size!

Why are rompers perfect for summer?

Rompers are a single-piece short bottomed version of a jumpsuit.

Instead of a full-length pant, they have a short bottom with an attached top making them a great choice for jumpsuit-loving fashionistas.

They are commonly made from lightweight materials, such as cotton or linen, which makes them perfect for summer.

Rompers can be worn by women of all sizes, and there are plenty of styles and designs to choose from.

The easy of use, fact that you really only need a single piece of clothing, and their summer-appropriate length make them the perfect summer outfit.

Plus, they’re a great way to show off your curves and feel confident and beautiful.

How to wear a romper if you’re plus size

Choose the right fabric

When it comes to picking out the best romper for summer weather, it’s important to consider the type of fabric.

Cotton and linen are often considered the two of the best fabrics for hot weather, as they’re both lightweight and breathable.

Which means they can keep you cool and comfortable in the heat of the summer sun.

Rayon and denim are also considered to be a comfortable summer fabric.

They’re both cotton blends, and thus are usually able to absorb moisture and dry quickly.

Rayon, in particular, is light and breathable.

While denim is a little thicker, the knit is loose enough that body heat can escape and a breeze can flow through.

But some people prefer denim’s lighter counterpart, chambray.

You’ll want to avoid polyester or other synthetic materials in the summer heat.

While it’s not true straight across the board, many of them trap heat and make you sweat.

Choose the right style

Not all rompers are created equal.

Some styles work better for certain body types, and it’s important to choose the one that’s right for you if you’re looking to feel confident in a romper.

Those with hourglass and pear shapes probably want to go with something cinched or tied at the waist.

That gives you the opportunity to show off your curves.

But pear shapes might want to offset their smaller top section with fun accented sleeves.

While hourglass will want to avoid anything baggy.

Apple body shapes look great with v-neck rompers that can help show off the girls.

You’ll want to avoid big shoulders and cinched waists, otherwise you’re drawing attention away from the areas you want to accent.

Those with a more straight body type probably want to go with something that’s fitted and not too lose or tight.

Sleeveless is often a safe bet, cinched waists can add to accentuating a curvier shape, and shapewear can be your BFF.

No matter what your body type, it’s important to find a romper that fits you well.

Avoid rompers that are too tight or too loose – they will only make you more self-conscious.

Consider where you’re going to wear it

It’s important to think about where you’re planning on wearing your romper.

While rompers are great for summer, they don’t all fit every summer situation well.

If you’re wearing your romper in a professional business setting, you’ll want to make sure it’s a little more on the modest side.

Maybe avoid the plunging v-necks and super short bottoms.

But you can still find a romper with cute, professional details like ruffles or cap sleeves.

On the other hand, if you’re going to a summer BBQ or party, have fun with your romper!

Choose a romper that features bright color or fun print.

Don’t be afraid to show a little more skin with a shorter bottom or lower-cut neckline.

Of course, there are always loungeable rompers that you can work out or hangout at home in.

And don’t be afraid to accessorize – statement earrings or a colorful scarf can really make your outfit pop.

Wearing a romper with a plus size body doesn’t have to be scary or boring!

Add your favorite accessories

Speaking of accessories, you’ll want to pick the right ones.

Because rompers are best for warmer weather, sandals would be a great match.

Heels can also work, depending on the style of your romper.

Just make sure they’re not too high – you don’t want to be tottering around in the heat!

A straw hat is a great way to add a touch of summer style, and it can also help keep the sun off your face.

If you’re worried about your hair, try a cute headband or scarf instead.

Heck, even a cute pair of earrings and a layered necklace can do the trick.

A fun crossbody bag can add a pop of color and personality to your outfit.

And it’s also a great way to carry your essentials without having to carry around a big purse.

But if you’re headed to the office, you can pair it with a sleek and classic purse that’s perfect for work.

Finding the right romper for you is only one piece of the puzzle.

But with the right style and accessories, you can look and feel that much better no matter your size!
