Fly in Style With a Plus Size Bomber Jacket

Bomber jackets were never my thing before, but I saw the cutest one in a sale once and purchased it.

And there’s no going back, they’re just too damn cute.

What I love about them is the fact that they’re cool and casual, but easy enough to dress up and down.

And finding the perfect plus size bomber jacket doesn’t have to be a real feat. We’ve got a few great picks on our list!

History of the bomber jacket

Bomber jackets or flight jackets were created by the US Army Aviation Clothing Board in 1917, to keep pilots warm while the flew in uninsulated cockpits.

Often made of seal skin or horse leather, and insulated with cozy fur, these jackets were a must-have if you were going to jump in the plane.

Now, the jackets we buy today aren’t exactly meant to do that.

They’re often a little thinner—made more for casual dress, instead of potential sub-zero temperatures.

And they’re a little more dressy than the traditional look.

But bomber jackets these days still bear a similar look, and they’re very stylish.

Best affordable plus size bomber jackets

I LOVE the bomber jacket.

When Addition Elle went out of business here in Canada, I got myself a gorgeous, muted, dark floral print jacket.

Sadly, the occasions to wear it have been far and few between, simply because it’s been a little hot lately.

But I’m stoked to wear it more as the fall comes in.

Sadly, you can’t get your hands on my exact bomber jacket.

But I did find some other cute, affordable ones that you can absolutely get.

Agnes Orinda floral print

The Agnes Orinda flower print bomber jacket is a more casual jacket, it’s a little more plasticy which makes it harder to dress up.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not adorable and great for your daily or weekend fun.

It features classic long sleeves, and has two front pockets.

You’ll want to layer this bad boy if it’s a little colder out there.

Plus it’s easy to take care of, according to the manufacturer you need to wash it inside out with no bleach.

For casual comfort, the Uxcell lightweight bomber jacket is your guy.

It features a solid color mixed with a ribbed black trim.

You can pick from black, grey, green, red, and dark blue—ideal, regardless of what your style is.

This jacket is unlined, stand collar, zip-up front, and a contrast ribbed trim.

It’s perfect for everyday wear, throw it on right before you head out with your friends and you’ll be ready to go!

MakeMeChic floral print

I love the fun floral print of this bomber jacket.

There are five total color choices of the MakeMeChic jacket, but my pick is the navy with white and pink floral accents.

It’s perfect for spring, summer or fall.

Made out of lightweight fabric, this jacket has two pockets, a zipper front, and a stand collar.

The patterns are neutral enough that you can pair with a number of outfit options, but it’s cute enough to get a few comments.

Reviewers share that this jacket is beautiful, soft, and comfortable.

However, there’s no lining inside, so on cooler days you might want to wear a long-sleeved tee

What to wear with a bomber jacket

Bomber jackets are versatile and lightweight, which makes them the perfect pairing for a comfortable, casual look. It can be paired with almost anything, but these four pieces are probably my favorite:

Crop top

The summer weather isn’t gone quite yet, which means you still have time to pull out that crop top.

Crop tops pair fantastically with plus size bomber jackets, especially if you’re pairing it with some cute paper bag or short-shorts.

Matching crop tops with the perfect bomber rests in the colors and patterns.

Pair a plain crop top with a flashier jackets, but a bolder crop top like the Adriana crop top with a plain, accent jacket.

Graphic tee

If you’re looking for cool, calm, and collected, then pairing your bomber jacket with a cute graphic tee is what you want.

I’m not traditionally a fan of graphic tees, some cute ones really work for me!

Your tee can be anything—if you have a flashier jacket, then you can go with a more toned-down tee.

But if you want to go all-out with the tee, then go with a nice casual solid-print bomber.

High-waisted jeans

The billowing bomber jacket is the perfect companion to a pair of cute, tight, high-waisted jeans (honestly, even a pair of sailor-style pants would do).

I know the kids say the cigarette pants aren’t fashionable anymore, but I have to tell you that dressing up this heavy bod with big on the bottom really doesn’t look great (unless I’m wearing a cute jumpsuit).

That’s why, especially with the bomber jackets that feature a more billowy top, I recommend making your high-waisted jeans a cigarette leg.

If I was making an outfit myself, I’d pair the Unique Vintage indigo jeans with the Anna-Kaci tropical print.

You could even go with a lighter jacket if you want—basically something that adds a little umph to your wardrobe.

Printed pants

While not every bomber jacket outfit is ready for printed pants, if you’re going with a solid-colored jacket, a pair of printed pants and a plain tee are a great pick.

I love the mustard and black high-waisted cigarette pants we have pictured paired with the solid black In’voland bomber.

It’s a chic-yet-casual look that’s perfect for the plus size fashionista. You can pair it with your favorite heels, or if the weather is cooler, go with a cute tall boot!

Bomber Jacket FAQs

Is a bomber jacket still in style?

While bomber jackets were made in the early 1900s, they’re still popular today. In fact, in the last few years, they’ve become more popular. The real question is, are you in style without one?

Is a bomber jacket used in winter?

Yes, you can wear bomber jackets in the winter—but you’ll want to find one that’s made of slightly heavier material. Many of the jackets designed for fall and spring wear aren’t made with lining, so they’re not winter ready.
