Build Your Own Plus Size Cowgirl Outfit With These 11 Pieces
I’m from Alberta — a place I commonly refer to as the “Texas of Canada.”
Why, do you ask? Because it’s a little more redneck then some of the country’s more sophisticated cities, like Vancouver or Toronto.
In fact, it’s so country-focused that it’s home to the world’s largest stampede, aptly called the Calgary Stampede which takes place every July.
Which means I know a little somethin’ about putting together the perfect plus size cowgirl outfit.
From head-to-toe, I’m happy to walk you through what items you’ll want to add to your shopping list if you’re looking to put together your very own cowgirl costume.
Whether you’re headed out for a hoedown or you’re meeting someone outside the bar for a showdown, these pieces are must-have for your plus size cowgirl outfit.
Western clothing for plus size
There’s an art form to putting together the best plus size cowgirl outfit.
Whether you’re headed to the Calgary Stampede or you’re dressing up for Halloween, you want to find something that fits your personal style — do you prefer pants or a skirt?
Plus you want it to give you that western edge you’re looking for.
That starts with getting the clothing right, here are your best options:

Western shirt
If you’re a jeans and top kinda gal, you’ll want to find a western-themed shirt to start off your look.
I personally like to go with something that’s both bold and sophisticated.
I think Unique Vintage’s pink and black plus size cowgirl shirt brings those two elements together.
But it is a bit on the flashy side.
Honestly, there are a lot of options out there that can probably call themselves a cowgirl shirt.

But if you really want to pull off the look think:
- Tassels
- Denim
- Suede
- Hankercheif patterns
If you want something less attention-grabbing, you can go with a more classic option like this denim colorblock shirt.
This top gives you the opportunity to let your personality do the work, and let your outfit play second fiddle.
Not to mention, chambray is a great choice for summer fabric considering it’s all-cotton make but lighter weight compared to regular denim.
If you want to go full-on Canadian tuxedo with your cowgirl outfit, this is the shirt for you!

Jeans
Jeans are about as western as you get.
Manya cowgirl has cut a rug line dancing in a pair of classic denim.
Do you have a shiny pair of boots to show off?
I recommend going with something that has a skinny bottom like this high-waisted pair from Unique Vintage.

That said, a simple boot-cut jean is built with a solid pair in mind.
Something like these cinched jeans might be the perfect fit if you want to show off a big ole belt buckle.
However, a slightly flared jean works too.
You want to make sure that your flare isn’t full-on bell-bottom since that’s more hippy and less western.
But a little flare never hurt anyone!

Denim skirt
If you’re looking to avoid a heavy jean on a hot day, you might consider switching to a denim skirt.
A maxi chambray or denim skirt is really the full-on cowgirl pick.
But that doesn’t necessarily give you a lot of sex appeal to work with.

If you’re itching to show off those legs (hell, yeah!), then something a little shorter might be in order.
I like a knee-length skirt that lets you show off your calves without flashing your undies when you get on that horse.
Daisy dukes are also an acceptable western pick.
But you’ll want to make sure you head off any potential chub rub issues you might come across!

Western dress
If you’re headed to a western-themed wedding or simply want to dress up a bit, a dress might be in order.
The western fringe dress is my FAVORITE pick.
However, it’s bold coloring and flashy fringe might be a bit much for some of us!

With that in mind, you can go with something denim-focused.
The Mika dress is perfect for a western themed look.
However, you can also wear it for a regular-ole look.
This way you get the full-on jean look and feel but you get to do it in a breezy dress.

Cowboy boots
Your cowboy boots are probably the most important part of the overall outfit.
Your top and bottoms (or dress) are crucial in giving you the western appeal.
But you simply cannot make a plus size cowgirl outfit without a pair of solid wide width cowboy boots.
If you’re planning on wearing these bad boys often, I recommend investing in a good, solid pair like the Ariat Heritage boot.

Cowboy boots come in all shapes, sizes and looks.
From bootie to fringe, you’ll definitely be able to find something that fits your personal style.
If you want something that has a more dressy, stylish appeal, Cato Fashions has these super cute ankle booties that have a cowgirl feel to them.
Cowgirl accessories
No plus size cowgirl outfit is fit without the proper accessories.
If you want to take your look to the next level, you’re going to want to consider adding a hat, bandana, or something else to help build that authenticity.
Here are some of the more popular western accessories that you might want to consider:

Cowboy hat
You simply cannot pull off any western outfit sans cowboy (girl?) hat.
It simply cannot be done.
Black felt is a simple, classic choice.
Not to mention it allows for a little more mix-and-match with the rest of the pieces.
If you go for something pseudo-western, you might even be able to pull off a simple fall felt hat when it’s off-season.

However, a straw cowgirl hat is also a great choice.
It gives you a more rustic laissez-faire, go-with-the-flow look that’s perfect for the cowgirl attitude.
Not to mention it can double as a sun hat.
I particularly like that it’s packable, so if you need to pack it in a suitcase, it’s a good choice!

Bandana
Bandanas are a classic outfit addition.
But if you’ve got a bigger neck like me, you might need to look for something that’s a tad closer to an extra large.
Red, black, white or a dark navy blue tend to be standard western uniform.
However, they make them in so many colors, you can spice up your outfit any way you want!

Suspenders
While a belt (and belt buckle) are the usual western choice, you do have another option.
Suspenders can give you a dated-yet-sophisticated look.
It’s perfect if you want an edge if you’re trying to win a costume contest.
Suspenders come in all patterns and colors, but something in a classic brown is very cowgirl.
Western jewelry
Jewelry can add a little something to every outfit.
But if you’re looking to stay on the cowgirl outfit theme, you’ll want to focus on items with a more western edge:

Belt buckle
Big belt buckles are a classic piece of western jewelry.
If you’re going suspender-less, no plus size cowgirl outfit will be complete without one.
There’s nothing like adding a little extra flare with a nice big belt buckle.
Bonus points for the turquois jewels!

Neck tie
Western neck ties are unlike traditional ties.
They feature two strings that go through a beaded, jeweled accent that’s usually as goody as a belt buckle.
If you’re thinking necklace, I recommend you pick up one of these bad boys instead!

Earrings
Is an outfit ever complete without earrings?
Technically, I’m allergic to metal so mine always are.
But most outfits can use a little spruce and shine from something fun and dangly.
The great news is you can pick pretty much any set to go with your outfit.
But if you’ve got something extra big and bold (like Texas) those’ll probably be your best bet!
Go full on plus size cowgirl costume
Putting together your cowgirl look for a party or other Halloween-like event?
Perhaps a more traditional rodeo costume works best for you.
Those of us that don’t wear western-style pieces on a regular basis might not want to waste the time (or extra cash) for separates.
If that’s the case, I recommend heading to HalloweenCostumes.com or another costume shop to pick up something pre-designed.
Whether you want to wear a pair of themed chaps or head to the rodeo, there’s something out there for you.
