Mexico has A LOT to offer (seriously, it does), including HELLA cheap phone plans. I was SHOCKED when I found out.
The best way to stay connected when you’re in Mexico is to buy a Mexican SIM card when you get there. Trust me, it’ll be WAY cheaper than upgrading whatever phone plan you already have and well worth it.
Whether you’re staying for a short while or a long time, Mexico SIM cards ARE the best option. Luckily for you, I’ve tested a bunch of them out and I’m here to tell you how that experience went. So, let’s dig into SIM cards in Mexico!
Do I REALLY Need a Mexican SIM Card?
Yes m’am!
I cannot overstate the importance of staying connected to friends and family while traveling, especially if you’re on a solo journey. Not only does it provide a sense of security for you, it helps comfort those who love you ensure they can get in contact.
I stand firm in saying that Mexico is a safe country to travel to, but for many it’s a foreign soil. You simply can’t predict what unexpected challenges you’ll face (ask me about the time my wallet was stolen in Cancun). Having a reliable form of communication can be a serious lifesaver.
Beyond that, it’s cheap. Like REALLY cheap if you’re coming from Canada or the United States. I was truly shocked at the generous data packages available for affordable prices (and appled at what my Canadian phone plan cost).
Plus, WhatsApp reigns supreme around here. Whether you’re ordering food from a local mom-and-pop joint or connecting with you new Mexican friends, it’s an integral part of the culture. Having access to WhatsApp via a local SIM is invaluable.
While it might seem tempting to rely on sporadic Wi-Fi spots or international roaming, investing in a Mexican SIM card is a game-changer. It ensures convenience, constant connectivity, and a richer travel experience – it’s really apart of my day-to-day life here in Mexico.
Best Mexico Sim Cards
1. For Digital Nomads: Pillofon
Pillofon stands out as the best choice of SIM card in Mexico for digital nomads that are going to be here for a while. I need to premise this by saying that your phone need to be compatible with their service, a quick check on their site is a must before making any decisions.
They have BY FAR the most generous plans that can allow you to run a full business using their plans – trust me, I’ve done it. If you don’t have a compatible device (I didn’t) once you’re here in Mexico you can buy one for relatively cheap. I splurged on a Samsung S10 ($249 USD) and added a SIM card for $50 MXN ($2.75 USD) to set up a full DIY travel wifi.
What makes Pillofon top notch is the fact that they utilize almost everyone else’s network to make sure you always have coverage. And it really DOES work, I used it for a solid six months as my primary wifi and the experience was golden. They also recently introduced an eSim, so you can access it without a traditional SIM. However, you’ll still need to check capatibility.
The only downside I’ve ever experienced is that sometimes, on the ocean side of my house, my phone goes into roaming mode which makes it slower. But beyond that it’s been a great experience. Here are the plans you can consider:

It’s worth noting that you can ONLY SHARE DATA on the Chido, Perro and OLV plans. If you’re setting up a backup wifi device, you’ll need one of these plans. With the OLV plan “unlimited” data technically means 50 GB at their fastest speed, and another 50 GB at their second fastest – FYI I’ve tested and BOTH speeds are good enough for watching and downloading movies.
2. AT&T Unidos México
When it comes to SIM card providers in Mexico, AT&T Unidos México stands out prominently, especially for those who frequent the beach areas. Among the options available, I’ve noticed that AT&T Mexico consistently offers the most extensive service coverage by the shoreline.
While Telcel’s regular internet service often leaves much to be desired, AT&T Mexico proves to be a more reliable alternative. That said, for those considering broadband options, fibre optic solutions via Total Play or Telmex are undoubtedly top-tier.
One of the distinctive advantages of AT&T Mexico is its resilience during power outages. In situations where the electricity takes a hit, I’ve noticed that AT&T remains operational, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity. In contrast, Telcel doesn’t always hold up in these scenarios.
However, I will say that AT&T offers less competitive plans than Telcel, and there’s a tiny hitch in accessibility. Getting an AT&T card often means shopping around. While you might easily find Telcel at an Oxxo, AT&T cards are noticeably absent. Nonetheless, recharging them should be feasible.

Telcel is undeniably a name that resonates with many when discussing SIM card providers in Mexico. While it’s not my favorite company out there, it is what I use for my main number, primarily because it’s the number my mom already knows.
With a range of impressive plans and commendable service, Telcel has made its mark in almost every nook and cranny of the country. However, there’s one exception: the beach. Over the last two years, I’ve seen significant improvements in their beach service, but it still falls short of being my top pick.
While Telcel has a lot going for it, it’s not without its pitfalls. One consistent hiccup I’ve encountered is their customer service. It’s a sentiment echoed by many, making it more of common knowledge than just personal experience.
That said, if you’re new to the Mexican SIM card scene, Telcel might just be your safest bet because of the sheer volume of guides available, crafted by travelers who’ve treaded the path before you. For those considering Telcel, I’d recommend the Amigo plan. It offers the flexibility of a pay-as-you-go system, ensuring you’re always in control.

What’s the difference between “data” and “social”?
Mexican phone companies do this REALLY COOL thing where they calculate data you use for social apps like Facebook and Whatsapp separately because it’s everyone’s MAIN way to communication. Almost no one sends texts here, instead they use WhatsApp and Facebook Messanger.
You’ll notice that most plans will come with a seprate social calculator which means that times you spend on those apps WILL NOT count towards your data usage. You’ll also usually have more data available for this social usage.
It’s important to note that MOST phone companies require that you’re inside Mexico to use this social data, but your regular data can be used in Mexico, Canada and the United States. That means that means that when you’re visiting either country you ONLY need a Mexican SIM card!

Other Mexico Sim Cards
4. Movistar México
Moviestar offers plans ranging from $10 MXN (100 MB) to $200 MXN (5 GB), which honestly aren’t the best numbers. In many places their “best” coverage is going to be 3G, and you’ll most likely find it in the more populated areas. If you’re hanging out on the sandy shores in Progreso, you might be out of luck.
5. OXXO CEL
OXXO CEL provides plans from 10 MXN (50 MB) to 500 MXN (10 GB). However, a CRUP or legal identification is required to sign up with OXXO, which not everyone is going to have. Coverage is likely better in populated regions, though there isn’t absolute certainty.
6. Unefon
With Unefon, plans start at 30 MXN (300MB) and go up to 500 MXN (6.7GB). Their coverage map indicates better service in densely populated areas, which probably leaves you wanting in more rural communities.
7. Oui Móvil
Oui Móvil offers plans from 10 MXN (with no data but 500 MB for Whatsapp) to $200 MXN (7GB). They also provide the option of weekly refills for added convenience. However, their coverage is patchy, with better service in major cities.
8. weex
Weex presents an eSim option, making it a viable choice for some travelers. Plans range from 20 MXN (150 MB) to $199 MXN (4.5GB). While they offer 3G and 4G coverage in significant cities, it might be sparse in smaller coastal towns. However, touristy towns might experience decent coverage. Where to Buy a Mexican SIM Card
Amazon (Before You Go)
If you want to buy a Mexican SIM card befire your trip, Amazon offers a Telcel card option. This IS a convenient option, but it isn’t the most cost-effective. Honestly, cards on Amazon when you’re in the US or Canada cost considerably more than they do here on the ground.
For someone who needs to be ultra prepared and has the extra cash set aside, it’s a great option. But for most of us, I’ll recommend waiting until you’re in Mexico to get a SIM card since they tend to be easy to find.
Amazon Mexico (Once You’re Here)
Once you’ve touched down in Mexico, Amazon Mexico emerges as a convenient option for securing a SIM card. The platform boasts a wide range of SIM card offerings, ensuring you find one that suits your needs. What’s more, it provides the advantage of hassle-free delivery.
A notable edge Amazon Mexico has over alternatives like Mercado Libre is its no-strings-attached purchase process. Specifically, there’s no need for a CRUP, making the acquisition of a SIM card smooth and straightforward. That said, it STILL won’t be as cheap as some of the in store options.
The Airport
Upon your arrival in Mexico, the airport offers an immediate opportunity to purchase a SIM card. While it’s undeniably convenient, there’s a catch: the cost. SIM cards at the airport typically come with a premium, being about 20 to 30% pricier than those available outside… however it will be cheaper than buying one before your trip.
If you forgo getting one at the airport, you’ll want to make sure you pre-arrange your transportation. While they do offer free wifi, some people reporting having connectivitiy issues – though my mom was successful, you can be too!
OXXO
OXXO is most likely going to be your cheapest option, and the simplicity is hard to beat. When you make a purchase with a clerk, they’ll actually activate your card (at an OXXO or elsewhere), which will make it considerably easier for you to get set up and working.
f you’re unsure about asking for a SIM card, keep in mind the local term: “tarjeta SIM” (pronounced tar-heta seem). You can also show them a photo of what you’re looking for. While Telcel might not be my first recommendation, its widespread availability at Oxxo stores makes it a failsafe option if you’re caught off-guard.
Walmart
Walmart maintains a consistent presence across Mexico, the US, and Canada, offering a familiar shopping experience no matter where you are. When it comes to SIM cards, you’re in luck, as Walmart stocks them. As for the pricing, it aligns closely with what you’d find at other stores, making it a competitive option for those seeking a balance between cost and convenience.
Smaller Tiendas
Don’t underestimate the smaller convenience stores, such as Tiendas Six or even the quaint mom-and-pop shops dotting the streets. These establishments often carry SIM cards, offering an authentic local shopping experience. In fact, we managed to secure a SIM card for my mom from a humble shop situated roadside. A significant advantage of opting for these smaller stores is their hands-on service.
How to Set Up a Mexican SIM Card
Setting up a Mexican SIM card is a straightforward process, but there are a few key things to note. First and foremost, Mexican phone numbers typically begin with the country codes +52 or +55.
If you opt for a prepaid phone and purchase it locally, there’s minimal setup involved. Often, the store clerk will assist you with the process, ensuring you’re up and running in no time. The primary step involves swapping out your original SIM card for the new Mexican one. However, it’s crucial to keep your original SIM card safe, as you’ll likely need it once you’re back home.
For recharging your phone credit, you have multiple options. You can either recharge directly from your phone or utilize the service provider’s online portal. Personally, I’ve found Ding.com exceptionally convenient for sending money to my phone. After the funds are credited, I then make my selections on the phone’s website to allocate the credit as needed.
How to Change a SIM Card
Changing a SIM card might seem daunting, but with the right tools and steps, it’s a breeze. Follow this step-by-step guide to make the process seamless:
- Gather the Necessary Tools: Have on hand a slender tool, like a pin. If available, a specialized SIM card tool is ideal.
- Locate the SIM Card Tray: This is typically on the side of your phone. You’ll notice a small button or indent marking the spot.
- Eject the Current Card: Using your chosen tool, gently press the button or indent. The SIM card tray should pop out slightly.
- Remove and Store Safely: Carefully remove the current SIM card from the tray and store it in a secure place to avoid misplacement or damage.
- Insert the New SIM Card: Ensure the new card is oriented correctly. Place it in the tray and gently slide the tray back into the phone.
- Power Up: Turn on your phone, and it will now operate using the new SIM card’s credentials.
Remember, when you’re ready to revert to your original SIM card, simply follow these steps again. Once your original SIM is back in place, your phone will automatically return to your initial number and settings.
Where to Store Your Other SIM Cards
Managing multiple SIM cards can be a challenge, but with the right storage solution, it’s a breeze. I personally rely on a SIM card storage case. While it’s not a must-have for everyone, having multiple cards like I do makes such a case incredibly handy. Additionally, it serves as a convenient spot to store my SIM card tool, ensuring everything I need is in one centralized location.

Do they have 5G in Mexico?
Yes, 5G is available in Mexico, but it’s not as widespread as one might expect. While the majority of the country primarily relies on 3G, both 4G and 5G signals can be spotted in major cities. For instance, when I’m at the beach in Chelem, I usually receive a 4G connection. However, it’s essential to be aware that the availability of these advanced networks can vary based on location.
