Beauty Make Up

Create a Basic Makeup Look

I have always loved makeup, but I’m a bit of a newbie in creating adult makeup looks. As a teenager I was crazy about my makeup—give me all the colours. Seriously, all of them. But, as of late, I’ve been on the pursuit to find the perfect suite of looks for adult Tae, and that includes a great basic makeup look.

I also happen to have a TON of makeup and beauty products samples that I’ve been given and forget to use. So, over the next few weeks, I’ve decided to go through all of them and see what awesome makeup looks that I can create. And, of course, how much I love every product.

My Basic Makeup Look

Creating a basic, neutral makeup look with a tad bit of a flare is something I’ve been perfecting over the years. And my latest look, using the below products, is this:

Here’s the finished look before (left) and after (right) my night out.

I wore this look the other day when I went out for a business event and felt like a babe. It uses very neutral makeup with a splash of sparkle in the eyeshadow and a dash of bold in the eyebrows. In my opinion, it’s a great look and, best of all, it took like 10 minutes to make. Here’s what I used:

Creating Your Makeup Base

Pur Correcting Primer

The Pur Correcting Primer is amazing. I got it in the Winter 2019 Causebox and immediately fell in love. I’ve been using Dr. Brandt Pores No More as my primer for years now, and while I like it for lighter makeup days, I’ve been looking for something that’s better for my oily and sensitive skin. Enter Pur.

Not only is this Pur primer slightly less expensive, it works like a charm. It creates a thin layer over your skin that builds a perfect base for makeup. I love it because it essentially feels like putting on moisturizer instead of a thin foundation like I find most primers.

When prepping today’s makeup look, I put on a little bit of my moisturizer, Active Moist by Dermalogica before adding a layer of the Pur primer.

Smashbox Stick Foundation

Among my many makeup samples, I had a sample set of the Smashbox Studio Skin Shaping Foundation. And I have to say I love it. I’ve been looking for a more night-out specific foundation preferably that’s travel-friendly for a while now, and this could be the one. We’ll see after I’m done with my makeup trials—I have a few different ones to try out.

While the Smashbox foundation stick normally comes as a stick with your foundation on one side and your contour on the other, my sample was in liquid form so I used a brush where you would normally just swipe it on. It glides on really easily and blends in beautifully. I think in a few areas I went a little dark with the contour originally, but it was super easy to correct. It was a really nice foundation and I didn’t need to use any powder to cover uneven spots.

This is also a great foundation for travel because it’s not a liquid, so it cuts down on what you need to include in your liquids allowance (especially if you’re travelling carry-on only). You can toss this stick into your makeup bag and call it a day!

Creating Beautiful Basic Eye Makeup

Anastasia Beverly Hills Eyeshadow, Pink Champagne

I am a selective eyeshadow wearer who prefers more neutral tones, and one of my absolute favourites is the Pink Champagne by Anastasia Beverly Hills—who I realize as I write this post makes a lot of the makeup I love.

For my basic makeup look today, I only used the pink champagne all over both eyelids with a tiny dab underneath. I love this eyeshadow because not only does it have a neutral look, but it also adds a touch of sparkle to your lids. Daring but delicate!

Eyelash Curler

If you are like me and aren’t lucky enough to have a little extra cash to throw towards getting eyelash extensions, then you need a good mascara and an eyelash curly.

In all honesty, and someone can correct me if I’m wrong, you don’t need a fancy expensive eyelash curler to make an impact. Something like the Brilliant Beauty Eyelash Curler will do perfectly.

Too Faced Damn Girl Mascara

Once upon a time I LOVED this mascara called “Texas Lash” but it was discontinued, and since then I’ve been a HUGE Too Faced fan. With this particular look I used Too Faced Damn-Girl, but I also regularly use Better Than Sex. I love them both equally.

I picked Damn Girl for this particular look because I find it has a tad bit more drama to it, which is great if you’re creating a basic makeup look that you want to give just the slightest edge to. I find the Better Than Sex to create a cleaner, more professional look.

Designing Amazing Eyebrows

Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade

In this particular look, I used the Ash Brown pomade. My hair colour is 100% natural (right now) and quite dark, however my eyebrows are naturally darker than my hair so I tend to go with a darker eyebrow colour.

I use my eyebrows as a focal point for my face because they draw so much attention naturally, so I tend to go as dark as I can without going black because you can tell instantly that it’s just too dark for my lighter skin tone.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Eyebrow Stencils

I have been using the Anastasia Beverly Hills Classic Stencils since I first stole them from my mom when I was 16—er, I mean borrowed them. ? They are truly an amazing product that can help you create gorgeous and dramatic eyebrows.

I switch which one I use depending on what look I’m going for, but for this particular look I used the full arch. I have massive eyebrows, and as beautiful as they are, they really need to be tamed. These eyebrow stencils are stellar at taming them while still creating a basic makeup look.

Basic Lips

Tarteist Lip Paint, Birthday Suit

I really like a basic, barely-there lip, and Tarteist Lip Paint’s Birthday Suit is absolutely perfect for that. For my skin tone, this is the exact match, so while it gives a tiny bit of colour if you’re really looking, it mostly just gives your lip a basic finish.

I also really like how the Tarteist Lip Paint dries. It gives a matte, dull finish which is ABSOLUTELY amazing for the plain, basic makeup look that you’re trying to create.

Must-Use Tools for the Basic Makeup Look

La Beauté Soi Makeup Brushes

I got the La Beauté Soi set of makeup brushes in one of my Causebox boxes and I love them. It’s a beautiful 10-piece set that comes in a handy carrying case. It has four face and six eye brushes, perfect for any look you’re going to create.

Beauty Blender Makeup Sponge

The Beauty Blender Makeup Sponge is perfect to get that gorgeous airbrushed look that we’re all looking for. You can use this with your foundations, powders and creams, and basically use it anywhere you need a blend!
